Terras de Bouro, gemeente Rio Calda

Wanneer het weer ons stralend uitdaagt springen we in de auto om de directe omgeving van Barreiros beter te leren kennen. Er is hier zoveel te zien! Onze bed en breakfast gasten reserveren minstens één, maar vaker meerdere dagen voor het National Park Peneda-Gères. Dit is het oudste nationale park van Portugal, grenzend aan Spanje, en verdeeld in twee grotere delen. UNESCO heeft het tot werelderfgoed verklaard vanwege haar biosfeer. Peneda is rotsachtig en kent magnifieke uitzichten, hunebedden en prachtige wandeluitdagingen. Gères is natter: watervallen, groen, schaduw en wandeluitdagingen. Ieder zijn meug.

Ja, en wat zie je dan op de nationaal routes die gewoon door dit gebied lopen [dus goede wegen, duidelijke bewegwijzering, veiligheidsmaatregelen]? Natuurlijk mogen de vergezichten niet onbenoemd blijven. Achter iedere bocht een nieuwe parel met rotspartijen, uitgeslepen dalen, enorme keien, waarschuwingen voor overstekende koeien, rustieke dorpjes met pittoreske kapellen en kerken. De regio is agrarisch gebied met kleine familie percelen: mensen leven in relatieve welstand, maar moeten er hard en tot hun dood werken. In de bergen is het in de wintermaanden nat en koud: de tand des tijds tekent de gezichten van de bewoners, waardoor het inschatten van de leeftijd tot het onmogelijke behoort. Wij zien er daardoor eigenlijk altijd jeugdig en fris uit.

In het nationaal park bevinden zich twee heiligdommen voor de Rooms Katholieke kerk: ja, je bent in Portugal. Deze heiligdommen worden dagelijks bezocht door bedevaartgangers, jaarlijks zo’n 2,5 miljoen! Het is dus niet verrassend om een enorm hotel tegenover de kerk aan te treffen, en een dagelijks toeristenmarkt.

Onderling doen de heiligdommen niet voor elkaar onder in belang. In Peneda vind je de kopie van de Bom Jésus van Braga. Deze blog richt zich op Santuário de São Bento da Porta Aberta, ofwel het Heiligdom van St. Benedictus van de Open Deur in de gemeente Rio Calda. De eerste vermeldingen over deze kerk dateren van het jaar 1615. De huidige paus verhief in 2015 de kwalificatie van de kerk tot basiliek op de 400e verjaardag van de kerk. De naam verwijst naar het feit dat de deuren altijd open staan, opdat de reizigers er kunnen schuilen.

Ook wij waren gegrepen door de bijzondere kerk, die van grotere afstand al zichtbaar was. In de kerk is het geen overdonderend spel van goud, maar vind je een serene sfeer met schilderijen en tegeltableaus. De kerk biedt plaats aan een paar honderd bezoekers in gewone tijden. Dat is voor een bergdorpje groot, maar gezien alle pelgrims aan de krappe kant. Onder en naast de kerk is een crypte gebouwd, die ook bezocht kan worden. Er zijn grote tegelplateaus van de Heilige Benedictus en zijn leven geplaatst, die absoluut de moeite waard van het bekijken zijn.

Ja, en je moet er omheen lopen. Je vergaapt je aan de tegels die de gehele kerk bedekken. Waar andere betegelde gebouwen aan luie Portugezen worden toebedeeld, je hoeft je huis immers niet meer te schilderen, is het in het geval van het Heiligdom van St. Benedictus van de Open Deur een resultaat van devotie.

When we don't have guests in our bed and breakfast, and the weather challenges us radiantly, we jump in the car to get to know the immediate surroundings of Barreiros better. After all, we have only lived here in northern Portugal for two years and have not been able to devote much time to further researching the region due to the many activities in and around our house. And there's so much to see there! Our bed and breakfast guests from Portugal, and many from also outside the country, reserve at least one, but more often several days for the National Park Peneda-Gères. This is portugal's oldest national park, bordering Spain, and divided into two larger parts. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Site because of its biosphere. Peneda is rocky, has many views, dolmens and beautiful hiking challenges. Gères is wetter: waterfalls, greenery, shade and again hiking challenges. Everyone's good.

We took the car, because we wanted to go in a different direction within that same mega-large park. It was not our first visit and as mentioned we were looking for the paths in Gères that were unexplored for us. Yes, and what do you see on the national routes, which also just run through this area [so good roads, clear signage, safety measures]? Of course, the vistas must not go unmentioned. Behind every bend a new pearl with rocks, carved valleys, huge boulders, warnings for crossing cows, rustic villages with picturesque chapels and churches. It is an agricultural area with small plots: people live in relative a welfare, but have to work hard and until their death. In the mountains it is cold in the winter months: the test of time draws the faces of the inhabitants, making estimating age one of the impossible. As a result, we always look youthful and fresh.

In the national park there are two shrines to the Roman Catholic Church: yes, you are in Portugal. These shrines are visited daily by pilgrims, about 2.5 million annually! It is therefore not surprising to find a huge hotel opposite the church, as well as a daily market aimed at tourists.

Among themselves, the sanctuaries do not inferior to each other in importance. In Peneda you will find the copy of the Bom Jésus of Braga. We didn't go there. No, our goal was Santuário de São Bento da Porta Aberta or the Sanctuary of St. Benedict of the Open Door in the municipality of Rio Calda. The first mentions of this church date from the year 1615. The current pope elevated the church's qualification to basilica on the church's 400th anniversary in 2015. The name refers to the fact that the doors are always open, so that the travellers can hide there.

We, as not Catholic, were also seized by the special church, which was already visible from a fairly greater distance. In the actual church it is not an overwhelming game of gold, but rather a serene atmosphere with paintings and tile panels. The church can accommodate a few hundred visitors in ordinary times. That's big for a mountain village, but considering all the pilgrims on the tight side. A crypt has been built under and next to the church, which can also be visited. Large tile plateaus of Saint Benedict and his life have been placed, which are absolutely worth seeing.

Yes, and you have to walk around it. You marvel at the tiles that cover the entire church. Where other tiled buildings are assigned to lazy Portuguese, after all, you no longer have to paint your house, in the case of the Sanctuary of St. Benedict of the Open Door, it is a result of devotion.
